Symposium to express issues affecting East Malaysians

KUCHING: The 2nd Borneo States Symposium is set to take place on July 27.

It presents an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts, explore and map out their dreams of a better future for the people of Sarawak and Sabah.

In a press release by The Sarawak Initiatives, the symposium, which will be held at the Borneo Cultures Museum here, will cover topics on the Malaysia Agreement 1963, Global Education advancement, Cultural & Religious Diversity, Social Evolution, Economics and the Dreams & Visions of the Peoples of the Borneo States. Around 250 participants from both Sarawak and Sabah are expected to take part.

The symposium is a follow-up to the first one held in Kota Kinabalu on Nov 11, 2023.

“This symposium serves as a platform for participants to voice out their aspirations and concerns for the future.

“More than 60 years have passed, and Sabah and Sarawak have lagged behind in national and international progress in many aspects such as political maturity and intellectuality, education, economics, science and technology and others.

“Participants will be able to discuss and share their thoughts on many subject matters such as the Territorial Sea Act, Education Act, PDA and other issues that affect the people of the Borneo States,” TSI said.

It added that besides MA63, there would be discussions on the parliamentary representation from the Borneo States and having equal representation in important institutions that controlled our national fiscal and monetary and economic policies and activities including representations in GLCs.

“There will be discussions on cultural and religious diversity and how education, race and religions should not be weaponised to exploit and divide peoples.    

“Many State Legislative and Parliamentary lawmakers have confirmed their participation in the symposium,” TSI added.

Organised by TSI and Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar), the symposium is by invitation and those interested to attend are advised to book their slots early due to limited seats.
