KUCHING, Jan 25: Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds are expected across several areas in southern and central Sarawak this afternoon, with a thunderstorm warning in effect until 4pm today.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the affected areas are Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Betong (Saratok and Kabong), Sarikei (Sarikei and Meradong), Sibu (Selangau), Mukah and Bintulu (Tatau).
MetMalaysia explained that the alert is issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, which are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term alert that remains valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
