SIBU, June 11: The proposal to establish a Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) is moving into a crucial next phase, with the interim report of its feasibility study now completed and expected to be tabled to the Sarawak government next month.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, said he has been briefed on the preliminary findings of the six-month feasibility study on the proposed faculty.
“Earlier this morning, I received a briefing from the feasibility study team on the proposed Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) regarding the interim report of the proposal.
“The study and recommendations were carried out over the past six months,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (June 10).
According to him, the study aims to assess the suitability, necessity and potential of establishing the faculty in strengthening medical education development and healthcare human capital in Sarawak.
The study team comprises a mix of academic and medical experts with diverse specialisations, including UTS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shahril, Prof Dr Lela Suut, Prof Dr Awi Idi, Prof Dr Kamarudin Kana, Dr Alan Fong, Dr John Tang, Assoc Prof Sr Dr Kan Fock Kui, Dr Sim Siew Ling and Dr Zalikha Raman.
The full report is expected to be presented to the Sarawak government next month for further consideration on the proposed establishment of the faculty. — DayakDaily
