SIBU (July 12): There will be an exciting line-up of events to celebrate arts, culture and lifestyle during What About Kuching (WAK) Sibu Festival 2024 on July 25 until July 28 at Sibu Heritage Centre.
Speaking at a press conference before the WAK Sibu Festival 2024 Calendar Reveal yesterday, WAK Festival manager Brendan Chin said the organiser had put together 17 unique events which had received a handful of responses from artists, performers and enthusiasts eager to be part of the inaugural festival.
“The passion and creativity from our community have been truly inspiring, and we are proud to present a programme that reflects this energy.
“Our music programme is a highlight of the festival, featuring 10 talented acts or performers from Sibu, Sarikei, Kanowit and Kuching.
“We are especially excited to welcome the renowned Winnie Albert, who will grace our stage with her incredible talent,” he pointed out.
He also said that there will be a stunning fashion show and exhibition showcasing the creativity and innovation of the local fashion scene, providing a platform for designers to shine.
“In addition to music and fashion, our festival will feature a variety of other engaging events. There will be nature talks and exhibitions, where experts will share their knowledge and passion for the environment.
“Our arts and crafts talk and exhibitions will offer insights into traditional and contemporary art forms, allowing attendees to appreciate and learn about these diverse practices.
“We are also proud to present the ‘Baju Kuas Iban Balau Sarawak’ showcase, celebrating the intricate and beautiful traditional attire of the Iban Balau community,” he said.
He added that it provides a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and the craftsmanship involved in creating these stunning garments.
Meanwhile, chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Clarence Ting said he is happy to see that Sarawakians are gaining confidence in their own identity.
“We dare to show our skills particularly in fine arts and few other talents. I think this is a very good start for all the people in Sibu, showcasing what people in Sibu, the people of Sarawak are all about,” he said.
He said the council will support the programme.
Also present at the press conference were WAK Festival directors Donald Tan and Marina Foo.
