KUCHING (July 7): The 16th Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) covered car park yesterday featured 35 stalls.

Among them were regulars selling locally grown fresh figs and MD2 pineapples, which sold out in half an hour, as well as certified organic local vegetables, herbs, and other edible plants.

There were also stalls selling goat’s milk, honey, handmade soaps, home-made delicacies, roselle with calamansi drinks, aromatic drip coffee, exotic flowers, ornamental plants, as well as organic fertiliser.

“With five new sellers this month, there is always something new,” said organiser Ai Chin.

“The monthly market has become a meeting place of like minds. Buyers meet sellers and learn new things about healthy recipes, how to plant, what’s new. New faces become familiar.”

Customers learn about rose growing techniques from seller Irawanoto.

The market is held on the first Saturday of each month from 7.30am to 11.30am.

“As our new banner says, ‘Shop confidently. Be healthy. Eat safely. Save money!’ Keep it up Kuching. Way to go,” Ai Chin added.

Enlivening the atmosphere this month was the 10-member Perfect Wonderland Ensemble, which entertained all present with Chinese classical music.

Adding to the excitement was the Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (SSPCA) stall, where friendly vaccinated six-month-old puppies were star attractions for young and old alike.

Members of the Perfect Wonderland Ensemble entertain visitors and stallholders.

Since October 2022, the market has registered a total of 95 local growers who share their naturally-grown, pesticide-free, and handmade creative offerings.

The 17th Kuching Natural Farmers’ Market will be held on Aug 3.

Organised by Nature Resource Solutions and Kuching Urban Farming, the market is supported by MBKS.
