KOTA BHARU:

Police have arrested two women in connection with the fire at a firecracker and fireworks stall at Wakaf Che Yeh here yesterday morning.

Kota Bharu district police chief Azmir Damiri said the women, aged 44 and 38 who are the owner and keeper of the firecracker stall, were arrested at 8.30pm for investigation under Section 285 of the Penal Code.

“The firecracker and fireworks stall was operated by the owner of the eatery, a 44-year-old woman who had a permit to run the business at the same location.

“The examination by the fire brigade’s forensic team confirmed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the electrical wire connection from the premises to the decorative lights at the stall.

“Further investigations are ongoing,” he said in a statement today.

Azmir said police received an emergency call via the MERS 999 line informing them of a fire at a roadside stall selling firecrackers and fireworks.

“Investigations at the location found that the fire occurred in front of an eatery at Batu 3, Wakaf Che Yeh, Jalan Kuala Krai,” he said.
