SIBU: Education plays a crucial role in shaping a new generation capable of meeting the aspirations and needs of the country.

Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said various parties must therefore play a role in providing support and helping to expand the country’s educational resources.

“We need to realise that the spirit of cooperation in society is diminishing. Therefore, we hope that various parties play a role in supporting education,” he said in his speech read by councillor Joshua Ting at the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (SJK) Taman Rajang Charity Sale on Saturday (Nov 11).

Tion who is Bintulu MP also commended the efforts of SJK Taman Rajang’s Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) and school alumni for organising a charity sale programme to raise funds for school facility upgrades.

He said SJK Taman Rajang, a government primary school, has over 800 students and 50 teachers and school staff.

“The needs continue to grow. The process of applying for repairs involves a long period and a complicated process through the Department of Education.

“Therefore, the school chooses to take the initiative by organising fundraising activities to meet urgent needs.

“The right to education for children is something we all value greatly and cannot be compromised,” he added.

The SJK Taman Rajang charity sale programme aims to raise RM250,000 to upgrade school facilities such as the multipurpose hall, basketball and badminton court as well as toilets.

This charity sale is the second after the first was held in 2018 with the main objective of raising funds to upgrade school facilities.

A total of 29 stalls selling food and beverages, daily necessities, were set up for the programme. An esports area was also organised for the entertainment of attending children.

At the event, Ting, representing Tiong, announced an allocation of RM10,000 for SJK Taman Rajang.

Also present were Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, Chairman of the SJK Taman Rajang Alumni Kiing Teck Ho, SJK Taman Rajang PIBG Chairman Siew Heng Sam, the organising chairman Ying Charng Lieh, and the headmaster of SJK Taman Rajang Sim Siew King.
