KUCHING: The Malaysian-Indonesian Journalists Friendship Association (ISWAMI Malaysia) has expressed concern over transboundary haze affecting Malaysia following forest and land fires in several parts of Indonesia.

Its acting president Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman stressed that haze is not merely an environmental issue, but also one involving public health, the wellbeing of the people and the shared responsibility of regional countries.

“The recurring issue requires a comprehensive solution, rather than emergency measures taken only when the situation worsens,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 12).

ISWAMI Malaysia outlined five priorities to address the issue, beginning with protecting public health through air quality monitoring, accurate information, health advisories and protective measures, particularly for vulnerable groups.

“The public is also advised to refer to the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings and advice from the authorities.

“Strengthening prevention and enforcement in Indonesia by intensifying firefighting efforts, preventing open burning and taking firm action against parties that violate the law,” he said.

Another priority, he added, was enhancing cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia through the sharing of hotspot data, monitoring smoke movement, exchanging information, providing technical assistance and conducting firefighting operations when necessary.

He also said ISWAMI Malaysia stressed the importance of strengthening ASEAN’s commitment to prevention, preparedness and emergency response to achieve a haze-free region.

“Lastly, encouraging accurate, balanced and responsible media reporting. The media should prioritise facts, expert opinions and the voices of affected communities, while avoiding narratives that blame the entire population of any country,” he said.

ISWAMI Malaysia stressed that close ties between Malaysia and Indonesia should serve as the foundation for discussing the issue openly and maturely, without sidelining the interests of the people.

“Both countries have the right to enjoy clean air and a safe environment.

“Therefore, transboundary haze must no longer be treated as a seasonal problem without effective, long-term solutions that can be measured.

“ISWAMI Malaysia believes that sincere cooperation, clear accountability and effective action can ensure that the haze threat does not continue to recur, affecting people’s lives and environmental sustainability,” he added.
