SARAWAK’S State Budget 2027 places development at the forefront while continuing assistance to ease household expenses, with about 64 per cent of spending earmarked for development, says Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said the allocation reflected the government’s emphasis on building infrastructure and maintaining its focus on rural communities.

“This budget is people-centric and basically does something for everyone,” he said when speaking to reporters after Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg tabled the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today (Oct 12).

Dr Sim said Sarawak’s revenue had surpassed RM15 billion, compared with RM6.8 billion about a decade ago, strengthening its ability to fund development and support the people.

He said the budget projected a RM264 million surplus while setting aside another RM300 million for the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund.

“We don’t have to save, we can spend,” he said, highlighting the government’s decision to reserve part of its resources for the future.

On education, he welcomed the continuation of support covering free tertiary education, allowances, tuition assistance, school bus services and laptops to help students pursue their studies.

He said measures to address the cost of living, including financial assistance for eligible households and individuals, would provide further relief alongside the continuation of senior citizen health benefits.

Dr Sim also highlighted the continued 25 per cent electricity bill discount, saying it offered savings to households across income groups.

He said the combination of education assistance, welfare support and electricity discounts demonstrated how Sarawak’s stronger finances were translating into benefits for its people.
