Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the government will announce measures to address the over 7,000 job cuts in April within the next one or two weeks.
These measures include providing alternative employment opportunities, he said.
“The matter was raised at the recent National Economic Action Council meeting and I am taking steps to improve the situation and provide alternative jobs,” he told reporters at a Hari Raya Qurban event at Penanti here.
Yesterday, economy minister Akmal Nasrullah Nasir said Malaysia recorded 7,057 job losses in April, a 21% increase from 5,855 in March.
Anwar went on to say that those who recently lost their jobs could seek new opportunities in Perak, Penang, the Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Sarawak, which recently attracted new investments.
He also said the government was looking to help the recently unemployed find jobs in IT and AI-related fields and would help train them.
When asked if he was concerned about the reported job losses, Anwar said it had yet to reach an “alarming” level.
“But if we look at it in granular terms, every job lost by someone in a family is certainly worrying. So we are trying to deal with it as best as possible.”
