Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will consider six-term Kapit MP Alexander Nanta Linggi’s request to contest for a state seat “when the time comes”.
GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg said the ruling state coalition has not reached a stage where a decision needs to be made, Borneo Post reported.
“There have not been any discussions held on the matter. That is his personal stand. We will take it into consideration when the time comes,” said the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president.
Yesterday, Nanta indicated that he may not defend his Kapit parliamentary seat in the next general election, instead expressing interest in going for a state seat in the next Sarawak polls.
Nanta, who is federal works minister, said it was time to pass the baton at the federal level to younger leaders in PBB.
He is also the secretary-general for both GPS and PBB.
Nanta, who turns 68 in June, is among the more prominent non-Muslim Bumiputera leaders in PBB and has served as domestic trade minister in the past too.
