Kanowit records Sarawak’s highest API reading at 203

KUCHING: Kanowit recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Sarawak at 203 as of 12:00 pm today, moving into the very unhealthy category.

Kuching had the next highest reading at 184, followed by Samarahan at 175 and Serian at 171, according to the latest data from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) issued today (Sept. 18).

The unhealthy readings continued across several parts of the state, with Sibu recording 164, Sarikei 162, Bintulu 158, Sri Aman and Mukah 153 each, Lundu 151, Tebedu 149 and Kapit 125.

Lubok Antu remained at the lower end of the unhealthy range with an API reading of 101, while Betong recorded 166.

Meanwhile, air quality in several monitoring stations remained moderate, with Miri recording 75, ILP Miri 63, Samalaju 96, Lawas 56, Limbang 54 and Bario 53.

The API classification places readings from 101 to 200 in the unhealthy category, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate.

The index is based on a 24-hour running average of the most dominant pollutant parameter.

With most monitoring stations recording unhealthy readings, members of the public are advised to monitor the latest API readings and reduce prolonged outdoor activities in areas where air quality remains unhealthy.
