KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): The Trans Nusantara Expedition 2024 marks a significant step in promoting overland tourism and enhancing regional connectivity, promising an adventurous journey that will strengthen bonds and showcase the rich heritage of Borneo and Indonesia.
Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said
the 2024 Trans Nusantara Expedition will commence on August 17 in Kuching.
“Today’s convoy from Kota Kinabalu will join 25 cars and 64 participants from various countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Australia and Norway,” he said prior to flagging the convoy from Sabah’s capital city on Monday.
According to him, the journey spans 46 days, covering over 10,000 kilometres across Indonesia.
“This multinational convoy symbolises unity and will visit Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Flores, Lombok, Bali and Java,” Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism Board chairman, said.
He also emphasised the iconic nature of this expedition for Sabah.
“This is an iconic expedition that has happened to Sabah. We hope to create an influx and outflux of tourists, enhancing cross-border tourism.”
He said that as the third-largest island in the world, Borneo’s natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural history make it a compelling destination for global travellers.
He also lauded the ongoing development of the Pan Borneo Highway, calling it a significant milestone that enhances connectivity and fosters deeper ties among Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Indonesia.
“This infrastructure will facilitate smoother travel and open up Borneo’s hidden gems to the world,” he said.
“For us in Sabah, the strategic relocation of Indonesia’s capital to Kalimantan presents new opportunities for cooperation and growth,” Joniston stated.
He mentioned that the development of Sabah’s CIQ point to Kalimantan at Serudung in Kelabakan is underway and will soon play a crucial role in facilitating cross-border tourism.
Joniston also said the potential for Borneo to become a major draw for international tourists.
He stressed the importance of cohesive efforts between Sabah, Sarawak and Kalimantan to ensure the flourishing of Borneo’s tourism industry, which will bring economic benefits and foster cultural exchanges.
