Kuching court fines senior citizen RM400 for joining illegal cockfighting session

KUCHING (Aug 15): A senior citizen was fined RM400 in default 10 days in jail for participating in an illegal cockfighting session.

Danny Chiu Chuan Uong, 70, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali after the charge under Rule 5(3) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Cockfighting) Rules 1962 was read to him.

He committed the offence at an open space in a forest behind a premises in Kampung Batu 10, Matang at around 11.30am on June 12, 2024.

Based on the facts of the case, police raided the location and arrested seven men, including Chiu.

Among the items seized were one live chicken, one dead chicken, one cockspur, and a few pieces of wood inscribed with the numbers 300, 500 and 1,000.

An investigation found the men were involved in a cockfighting session without a licence from the authority.

Prosecuting the case was ASP Arman Ibrahim.

The other six men were sentenced accordingly for the same offence last month.
