KUCHING (July 18): A labourer was fined RM5,000 in default 14 months in jail after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrates’ Court here today to disposing a gold necklace stolen from his mother.
Khairul Anwar Zulkifli, 28, made the plea before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan after the charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code was read to him.
The Section provides for a jail term not exceeding seven years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Khairul committed the offence at a goldsmith shop in Cinmuk Commercial Centre, Kota Sentosa here at around 3.15pm on July 5, 2024.
Based on the facts of the case, Khairul’s brother found out, through a cousin, that the accused had sold their mother’s gold necklace which was worth RM10,650.
He then informed his mother who, upon checking, discovered the necklace missing from a sling bag where she had kept it.
Khairul was arrested on July 13 following a police report lodged.
An investigation found he had sold the necklace for RM9,600.
Police also seized a purchase agreement from the goldsmith shop as evidence of the accused disposing of the stolen property.
Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case, while Khairul was unrepresented by legal counsel.
