KUCHING: Biographer Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir has emphasised the importance of learning history and those who have contributed to the development of Sarawak.

He said to ensure that the state’s legacy is preserved and understood by the current and future generations, it is crucial to educate them about Sarawak’s rich history and unique political landscape.

“Remember the words of George Santayana, the philosopher, poet, and novelist, ‘Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it’.

“Yes, those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it,” he said.

He said this during the launching of Tun Openg: Sarawak First Governor Biography at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here on Sunday.

Earlier, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the launching of the biography.

Jeniri, who is also the author of the biography, added it took him over 15 years of research and finally the biography on the late Tun Abang Openg is published.

The senior fellow of the Malaysian Council of Professors (MPN) also said the launching of the biography is an honour to the immense services, sacrifices, and contributions of Tun Abang Openg to Sarawak and the country in general.

“The biography provides us with the opportunity to learn more about who Tun Abang Openg truly was. It captures the journey of his life, from his early beginnings to the end of his days.

“Also, let’s use the life story of Tun Openg as an inspiration for us to continue striving for success and wellbeing together,” he said.

Meanwhile, the book marks Jeniri’s third biography of a Sarawak governor, following those of Tun Pehin Sri Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and Tun Datuk Patinggi Abdul Rahman Ya’kub.
