KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16: TV Sarawak (TVS), under Sarawak Media Group (SMG), and RT, a Russian international news network, are exploring ways to expand content cooperation, with stories from Malaysia, Sarawak and the wider ASEAN region seen as having potential to reach audiences beyond the region.
Head of RT’s Representative Office in Indonesia and ASEAN Countries, Denis Bolotsky, said the partnership also creates opportunities for RT to bring stories and events from Sarawak to international audiences, while giving TVS access to RT’s international content and global newsroom experience.
“We are not only interested in enabling viewers in Sarawak to access our news, but we also derive significant benefit from staying informed about events in Sarawak.
“We have received contributions from TVS journalists and broadcast the Sarawak Regatta. Several of these events are relevant to international audiences, and we want our viewers across the globe and within ASEAN to see them,” he said after a brief meeting with SMG Chief Executive Officer Kushairi Abang, on Monday.
The meeting follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TVS and RT on July 4, 2025, which covers content and news exchange, international news coverage, staff training, knowledge sharing and the exploration of potential co-productions.
Denis also emphasised that the cooperation could extend beyond content exchange to joint content production, including feature programmes, travel programmes and stories highlighting cultural and social developments in ASEAN and Russia.
The cooperation could later be expanded through the RT Academy, which could serve as a platform for editorial teams from both organisations to exchange knowledge and experience.
“RT Academy would not only allow RT to share its experience in operating a global newsroom, but also enable it to better understand the perspectives and preferences of audiences in ASEAN.
“The RT Academy offers a great opportunity for us, not just to share our work and showcase our global operations to our colleagues at TVS, including newsroom staff, correspondents, producers and programme teams, but also to learn from you.
“Since we are targeting an ASEAN audience, we want to understand the public mindset, what viewers like and what they prefer to see on screen. It is also a learning experience for us. So, it is a two-way collaboration,” he added.
Denis said RT had previously organised two RT Academy programmes in Indonesia, in addition to offering the programme online.
Cooperation with broadcasters from BRICS member states and partner countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia, also enabled RT to gain different perspectives from the Global South in producing news content.
“We look at things from a completely different angle. We speak and use the same language. We are not international mainstream media; our slogan is ‘Question More’, and I believe that resonates strongly with our partners,” he added. -TVS
