PETALING JAYA:

A man was fined RM5,000 by the Kuching magistrates’ court today after pleading guilty to assaulting a passenger, spitting on a cabin crew member, and causing a disturbance on board a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching on April 22.

Borneo Post reported that magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the fine in default of five months’ jail on Izzan Hashim, 36.

The charge was brought under Regulation 102 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, punishable under Regulation 206(2)(A), which carries a maximum fine of RM25,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Izzan behaved aggressively towards the flight crew and repeatedly disrupted their ability to carry out their duties during the flight.

Police investigations found that he also punched a fellow passenger in the face and spat on a cabin crew member. It is understood that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

An aviation security officer at Kuching International Airport was placed on standby after the airline’s station manager reported an unruly passenger on the incoming flight from Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to arrive at 6.50pm.

Upon landing, Izzan was handed over to police at the airport for arrest and further action.

Deputy public prosecutor Afiq Safly Nor Kazly appeared for the prosecution, while Izzan was unrepresented.
