LAWAS, Sept 18: A 52-year-old man died after he was believed to have been accidentally shot by a friend in the Ulu Merarap area here on Thursday (Sept 17).
According to TVS, Lawas District Police Chief Deputy Supt Liong Tindan said the incident occurred at about 1.30am when the victim was believed to have been shot by his friend, who mistook him for an animal.

He said preliminary investigations found that the victim, the suspect, and another friend had gone to the area to hunt.
“Based on information from the complainant, who was also one of the victim’s friends, the suspect approached the complainant and asked for help after realising that the shot he had fired had struck the victim.
“The complainant and suspect then approached the victim and found that he had died at the scene. The complainant and suspect immediately went to the Lawas police station to lodge a report,” he said.
A police report on the incident was lodged at 4.59am that same day.
Liong said the 40-year-old suspect, a foreign national, surrendered at the Lawas District Police Headquarters (IPD) compound before being detained to assist investigations.
He said a team of police personnel was dispatched to the scene and found the victim lying on a logging road.
“Also found was a shotgun that was still with the victim, while another shotgun believed to have been used in the incident was found beside the victim’s body.
“Both firearms were seized to assist investigations. A urine screening test on the suspect returned negative for drugs,” he said.
He said the Forensics Team and K9 Unit from the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) also assisted with the scene investigation.
The victim’s body was referred to Lawas Hospital for a post-mortem.
Police are also appealing to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and provide it to the police. — DayakDaily
