KUCHING (Aug 3): A total of 944 local and international participants have taken part in a mass folk dance event held at Jubilee Recreation Ground at Padungan tonight in conjunction with the ongoing Kuching Festival Food Fair.
The participants were part of the 55 participating contingents and they hailed from Johor, Sabah, Butterworth, Simanggang, Lawas, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Mukah, Bintangor, Sarikei, Miri, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who represented Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the event, said this year marked the 33rd edition of the mass folk dance display event and the dance was in fact a reflection of Sarawak cultural tapestry.
“It is heartening to see all the different races coming together to showcase their unique folk dances, embodying the spirit of unity that Kuching City Day and our City of Unity represent,” said Wee.
Wee also expressed his wishes that more younger dancers from all races can be recruited to take part in the tradition of folk dancing.
