KUCHING, July 20: Kuching South City Council mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng distributed some 1,000 Sarawak miniature flags to motorists in conjunction with Sarawak Independence Day, which falls on July 22.
Wee urged Sarawakians to use the current flag, the ‘Ibu Pertiwi’, and not the old colonial-era flag, emphasising the importance of unity and not arguing over the issue.
He expressed support for Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s stance on using the current flag.
“The current Sarawak flag we use reflects our identity today and should be taken seriously to avoid confusion,” Wee stated.
“When tourists come to Sarawak and see two different flags, who will explain it to them?” he asked.
Wee drew a parallel to the practice of updating official portraits, such as replacing the picture of the previous Agong with that of the current one after a swearing-in ceremony.
“So use the present flag of Sarawak and let us not argue about it.”
He made these remarks before distributing the Sarawak flags near the iconic White Cat statue at Jalan Padungan today. The event was organized by the Sarawak United People’s Party Youth Kuching Branch.
Wee further urged the public to focus on building Sarawak rather than getting caught up in minor issues.
“Let’s move forward; you must have a bigger picture and a bigger vision for Sarawak 2030. If you keep picking at these small issues, it shows that people are too free and have nothing to do.”
“If we remain preoccupied with petty things, people will laugh at us. Are we here just to argue about small matters like which flag to use?” he asked. — DayakDaily
