MIRI (July 30): A man was charged in the Magistrates’ Court here today with possessing a machete without lawful purpose.

No plea was recorded from Johari Azlan of Taman Tunku here after the charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, punishable under Section 6(1) of the same Act, was read to him.

The Section provides for a jail term of between five and 10 years and whipping, upon conviction.

According to the charge, Johari was found to be in possession of a 49cm-long machete without a lawful purpose, at Jalan Rejang 4 in Taman Tunku at around noon on July 25 this year.

Magistrate Sandy Yvette Freddy had set Aug 5 for further mention of the case at the Sessions Court.

Johari was allowed to be released on bail of RM3,000 with one local surety pending the date.

ASP Mary Ong appeared for the prosecution, while Johari was without legal representation.
