MIRI (Nov 4): Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has called on the police to address the issue of ‘Mat Rempit’ (illegal motorcycle racers) in the city following numerous public complaints.

In a Facebook post today, he mentioned that a recent meeting was held with Miri district police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division head ASP Makkaranu Beddu to discuss key issues affecting the well-being and safety of road users in Miri.

“We have also discussed the issue of Mat Rempit and road safety. The problem of ‘Mat Rempit’ is getting worse in several hotspot areas around Miri.

“Illegal motorcycle modification activities and noise pollution problems are often the cause of complaints from local residents,” he said.

Chiew assured that he will continue to work with the authorities in engagement sessions to find a more effective approach to deal with this issue for the well-being of all parties.

He also addressed the issue of traffic control at congested Pujut GK Roundabout.

He mentioned that as a long-term solution, the government has approved a project to upgrade the Pujut GK roundabout, which will involve widening the road to three lanes and converting the roundabout to a traffic light system.

For a short-term solution, Chiew requested traffic policemen to be deployed to help ensure smooth flow of traffic during peak hours.

He thanked the Miri traffic police for agreeing to deploy two police officers to control traffic during peak hours, starting from Nov 1, 2024.

“This initiative is expected to reduce the traffic congestion that often occurs during peak hours, “ he said.

Meanwhile, Chiew commended the Miri district traffic police for their commitment and cooperation in ensuring the safety and smoothness of traffic in Miri City.
