KUCHING, Sept 16: Malaysians must view Malaysia Day as an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the nation’s formation, including the constitutional rights of Sabah and Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
In his special Malaysia Day message, Dr Sim stressed that Sept 16 should not be treated merely as a public holiday, but as an essential occasion to reflect on the country’s founding principles and future direction.
He noted that Malaysia Day marks the historic 1963 federation formed by Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah, and Singapore, before Singapore’s departure in 1965, underscoring the federal government’s binding obligations under MA63 and the Federal Constitution.
“Let us celebrate Malaysia Day together with purpose, mission and vision,” Dr Sim said, noting that national expectations of Sarawak are rising as the state takes on a bigger leadership role in regional development.
“Lately, many people have been looking towards Sarawak and placing their hopes on Sarawak as another way forward for Malaysia,” he added.
Dr Sim called on all Malaysians to leverage the occasion to reinforce unity and work collectively toward building a resilient national future. – TVS
