KUCHING (July 6): Over 400 participants from across Sarawak are competing in the 5th Sarawak Tang Soo Do Championship held at the Youth and Sports Complex here.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap when opening the two-day event said Tang Soo Do is an art of self-defence and teaches discipline.
“It teaches us that learning martial arts is not for bullying others but safeguarding our own safety when attacked. Similarly, the Sarawak GPS government is safeguarding the state’s rights and interests under the confines of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
“The Sarawak GPS government is similar to what you learn in Tang Soo Do — Sarawakians do not want to be bullied and wants what rightfully belongs to us to be given back,” he said.
He said participants of any sports competition play to win. However, he advised those who don’t win to keep training for the next competition as success belongs to those who persevere and train hard.
Yap added that as Sarawakians, we must continue to pursue all undertakings to contriubte back to the state through nation-building.
“We must embrace our diversity of ethnicity, religion and beliefs. By being inclusive, building mutual respect and acceptance, the foundation of trust and cohesiveness will strengthen.
“When this happens, people will always be proud to identify as ‘anak Sarawak’ and less by race, religion, geography or socio-economic background. This is what we call ‘Unity in Diversity’, which is an essential ingredient for Sarawak to achieve developed status by 2030 where every ‘anak Sarawak’ will share this economic prosperity,” he said.
