KUCHING (Aug 5): Some 130 bags of garbage weighing over a tonne were collected during a community cleaning programme conducted in Kampung Kudei Dungun here on Sunday.
The community event was jointly organised by the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Bandar Kuching parliamentary service centre and World Mission Society Church of God University Student Volunteer Group.
“We selected Kampung Kudei Dungun as the location for this event, hoping to raise the residents’ awareness of hygiene and environmental protection through this activity,” said George Lam, special assistant to Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, in a statement yesterday.
Lam said the DAP lawmaker had sponsored all the expenses for the event including the rental of large garbage bins, the purchase of garbage bags, gloves, and food for the volunteers.
He said Dr Yii wanted to be part of the community event but had to attend an official event in Putrajaya.
The South Korea-based volunteer group comprised volunteers who are university students from both South Korea and Sarawak.
According to Lam, they are enthusiastic about community activities and actively engage in community cleaning to promote the concepts of hygiene and environmental protection, aiming to create a sustainable living environment for future generations.
He observed that Kampung Kudei Dungun is currently facing water and electricity supply issues, and many residents are dealing with the structural issues of their homes.
“This village is built on government land and some residents have lived there for more than 40 years. I hope that the Sarawak government can find a relocation area for the villagers so they can have a better living environment,” he said.
Through the event, Lam hoped that the residents of Kampung Kudei Dungun will maintain cleanliness and take responsibility for their living environment by disposing of garbage in large bins.
