Public urged to prepare for Padawan road closures, diversions during Sukma Games cycling road race from Aug 14–17

KUCHING, Aug 6: Several roads in Padawan District, designated as the route for the cycling road race in the upcoming 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, will be closed with temporary diversions in stages from Aug 14 to 17.

The affected roads include Jalan Akses Politeknik Kuching, Jalan Pehin Sri Adenan Satem-Jalan FAC, Jalan Kampung Ulu Selang-Telaga Air traffic light, Kopodim traffic light and Matang Jaya traffic light.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mancha Ata announced these closures to alert the public and help motorists avoid the roads to prevent road congestion.

The cycling road race for Sukma Games Sarawak 2024 will take place from Aug 14 to 17, covering 144 kilometres, for individual events as well as men’s and women’s team events.

The race will start and end at Matang Polytechnic Kuching, with 15 contingents from all states in Malaysia, including a contingent from Brunei, expected to participate.

“To ensure the race runs smoothly and safely, the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) of the Sarawak police has been tasked with ensuring the safety and managing traffic during the upcoming 21st Sukma Games to minimise congestion and prevent accidents.

“Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion throughout the four days of the race.

“The public is advised to be extra cautious and plan their journeys if they have matters to attend to in the city, and to adhere to all traffic rules as instructed by the police on duty,” he said in a statement today.

Mancha added that enforcement action in accordance with the Road Transport Act 1987 will be taken against anyone who violates police instructions.

The police seek cooperation from all sectors to ensure the smooth organisation of the Sukma cycling road race.
