KUCHING, Feb 16: Political analyst Dato Peter Minos has called on Sarawakians to emulate the Chinese community’s commitment to advancing education and economic progress, saying such efforts can help ensure shared prosperity for all.

In a statement, he recalled fond memories of Chinese New Year in his early years in Bau during the 1960s, describing festive visits, the giving of angpows, and the warmth of close-knit Chinese families, many of whom lived in farm and garden homes and spoke Bidayuh.

He noted that over time, the Bau Chinese community prospered through hard work, particularly in pepper and rubber cultivation, with many now living in shoplots and modern homes—achievements he said reflect the traditional New Year wish for happiness and prosperity.

“I respect the Chinese community for being so hard-working and determined in improving their educational and economic status, as well as for being so focused on whatever they do.

“In Sarawak, the Chinese build our towns and cities, industries, public infrastructure, and utilities,” he said.

He also encouraged greater mutual learning and shared prosperity among communities, saying he hopes others will observe and emulate the dedication and drive he sees among the Chinese community.

“My best wishes to all Chinese friends and relatives. Happy Chinese New Year.” — DayakDaily
