KUCHING (Aug 6): Volunteers will receive monetary tokens of appreciation for their contributions to the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma), said Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.
He rubbished rumours claiming these volunteers will not be compensated as false.
“We do not provide allowances since they are volunteers but we offer tokens to recognise their dedication and teamwork in ensuring the success of this event.
“Everyone plays a crucial role in making the event run smoothly, including both the volunteers and the competing athletes,” he said.
The deputy minister was speaking to reporters during a Town Hall session of Kembara Jumpa Orang Muda with Federal Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Adam Adli Abd Halim at the Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Negeri Sarawak here on Sunday.
A total of 50 venues across nine divisions in Sarawak will be used for the 2024 Sukma from 17 to 24 August.
Over 4,000 volunteers, including those from government agencies, will be involved to ensure the smooth operation of the event.
More than 20 special committees have been established to manage various aspects of the 21st Sukma such as logistics and food services.
“We require over 4,000 personnel behind the scenes to ensure the success of the event, including government staff who will be on duty,” Rentap added.
The monetary tokens for the volunteers will be managed by the Sarawak Department of Youth and Sports.
