KUCHING (July 17): Hotels in Sarawak are prepared to accommodate around 10,000 guests coming for the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) next month, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting.
He was cited in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report as saying that the expectation is based on Sarawak’s ability to host 26,000 visitors during the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) held last month.
“Considering our hotels’ ability to handle such a large influx during the three-day RWMF, welcoming 26,000 visitors, I believe we are well-prepared for Sukma,” he said during ‘Juh Randau’ programme by Ukas yesterday.
Ting said hosting Sukma presents significant economic opportunities not only in Kuching but also across Sarawak.
“This time, we will see events organised outside Kuching as well, such as in Miri, which will host six categories.
“In doing so, we can attract visitors from neighbouring Brunei, thereby increasing the number of participants,” he added.
The Sukma 2024 hosted by Sarawak will take place from August 17 to 24, with some events scheduled to be held before the opening ceremony.
