Sarawak-owned i-CATS University College has been elevated to a full-fledged university after meeting all requirements set by the higher education ministry, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed.
Abang Johari said the new status of the Kuching-based college marked another milestone for the state’s higher education landscape, Borneo Post reported.
He said the university status would further strengthen Sarawak’s higher education sector, with the state now owning two universities, the other being the University of Technology Sarawak in Sibu.
The premier also noted that I-CATS’s focus on technology aligns with Sarawak’s development agenda, particularly with the establishment of a new aerospace faculty which will work together with the Istanbul Technical University in Turkey.
The college was first established in May 2002 as Kolej Teknologi PPKS offering diplomas in various programmes. It was renamed the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) in August 2006, and was made a university college in December 2020.
