MUKAH: Sarawak will submit an application to ensure that women’s sepak takraw continues to be part of the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024.

Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said only five states have registered thus far, which does not meet the required competition quota.

“Tomorrow, the Sukma Supreme Council meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

“I will attend the meeting along with Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“We have already discussed this with the National Sports Council and the ministry.

“Although there are only five teams, we hope and appeal that this sport can still be included, as these five states have long been prepared for the competition.”

He said this when met by reporters after inspecting several Sukma venues here today (July 17).

Regarding incentives for outstanding athletes at this Sukma event, Rentap, who is also the chef de mission of the Sarawak contingent, said the matter has been discussed and will be announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We hope our athletes receive strong support. When we win, there must be incentives. This provides motivation and appreciation for their efforts and dedication.”

Earlier, Rentap inspected several venues here, including Dewan Sri Balau at UiTM Mukah (judo), Politeknik Mukah (netball), Mukah Stadium (football) and MDDM Field (football).

He also expressed satisfaction with the smooth preparations at each competition venue, including accommodation arrangements in Mukah.
