PETALING JAYA:

Sarawak has established a rare earth elements (REE) industry development special committee as part of efforts to develop a high-impact REE industry, particularly for the semiconductor and aerospace sectors.

Deputy premier Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the special committee would coordinate studies and evaluate potential REE resources in Sarawak.

“The study framework is expected to be finalised by July,” Bernama reported him as saying during the debate on the motion of thanks for the governor’s address at the Sarawak assembly today.

Awang Tengah, who is also the state’s second minister for natural resources and urban development, also said 10 forest carbon study permits had been approved as of May 1, including one forest carbon licence covering 257,658ha.

“The carbon trading initiative not only has the potential to create a new economic sector, but will also strengthen the state’s commitment to the Paris Agreement through global carbon emission reduction and sustainable forest management,” he said.
