BINTULU, July 22: The 3km-long jetty of the Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd’s Methanol Plant jetty would be a perfect site for Sarawak to harness wave energy from ocean waves.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the jetty will connect the wharf for ship loading and export of products.
“During its construction, I saw that there are waves underneath the jetty, especially when it is 3km-long to the sea.
“That is why I will launch a prototype as an experiment to generate power from waves.
“This is a new technology. Only Spain has carried out this experiment at a small scale,” he said in an audio recording made available to the press after he held a press conference following the launching ceremony of Sarawak Methanol Complex in Tanjung Kidurong here today.
Abang Johari also foresees a potential for Sarawak to succeed in the experiment due to its strategic location as an island surrounded by the sea.
“This, of course, promises waves where we can operate turbines that harness the power of the waves and produce energy.
“This is a new approach where Sarawak Petchem will work together with Sarawak Energy Berhad,” he added.
On July 17, Abang Johari said that the first prototype will be launched in Bintulu sometime next month. — DayakDaily
