SIBU (July 17): Preparation of the three facilities in Sibu to stage the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) is 90 percent complete, said Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development Gerald Rentap Jabu.

He told reporters after visiting the Sibu Volleyball Stadium today that final works are being carried out at the stadium with the LED screen to be installed this weekend.

Rentap, who is also Sarawak Sukma chef de mission, added that work at Sibu Indoor Stadium (badminton venue) to add lights was in progress and awaiting delegation heads to give approval to use the stadium.

He also revealed that work at Tun Zaidi Stadium (football venue) will intensify in the next two to three weeks due to weather challenges.

“A few days ago it rained heavily and now it’s hot. Our contractor is really working hard to prepare the field. I was just informed two or three days ago that the field has been fertilized and now the grass has been cut.

“After this, the contractor will add sand before leveling the field again. We hope the grass will grow better. Since many strong teams will be competing in Sibu, we don’t want to give them a negative impression about the condition of the stadium or our field,” he explained.

In addition to Tun Zaidi Stadium, some football matches will also be played at the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre in Sibu Jaya.

The deputy minister, who previously visited Mukah, said the facilities there are now 100 percent complete.
