PETALING JAYA:

Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is standing by his call for a complete end to pig farming in the state.

In a statement, the sultan’s private secretary, Munir Bani, said Sultan Sharafuddin’s position on the matter was based on the impact of pig farming, including river pollution caused by waste.

Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed concern that pig farming could affect water catchment areas and rivers, which serve as water sources for the nine million residents of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

According to the sultan, the cost of implementing modern pig farming systems, especially those adhering to required standards, would be extremely high and impractical if intended solely to meet demand in Selangor.

“This is why His Royal Highness has suggested importing pork from other states, such as Sarawak, to meet the demand of non-Muslim communities in the state.

“Even a country like Singapore does not carry out pig farming and imports pork instead.”

Munir said the Selangor sultan was of the view that pig farming in the state, regardless of scale, would be unsuitable due to limited land resources that should instead be used for development benefiting society as a whole.

“In this regard, His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Selangor, wants the issue of pig farming to be fully resolved to prevent any anxiety and ensure peace and harmony in Selangor are maintained.”

In February, Sultan Sharafuddin called for a complete end to pig farming in the state, citing its environmental impact and Selangor’s demographic makeup.

The issue resurfaced late last month after Wong Siew Ki proposed a modern closed pig farming system, sparking criticism from detractors who accused her of contradicting the Selangor sultan.
