Swinburne Sarawak partners Idea Company to advance CEA innovation

KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus and Idea Company Sdn Bhd have formalised a five-year collaboration to strengthen entrepreneurship and capability development in controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) and agri-food innovation.

The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), provides a framework for both parties to explore joint programmes in agripreneurship, CEA and agri-food innovation, coordinated through the Swinburne Sarawak Entrepreneurship Hub.

The MoU was signed by Swinburne Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Lau Hieng Ho, and Idea Company’s Group Managing Director, Ahmad Zachry Anifah Aman, at Swinburne Sarawak.

The signing was witnessed by Swinburne Sarawak Faculty of Business, Design and Arts Dean, Professor Brian Wong Kee Mun, and Idea Company’s Director, Pang Su Yen.

Lau said the partnership reflected Swinburne Sarawak’s commitment to extending learning beyond the classroom by giving students greater exposure to real-world industries, technologies and challenges.

“Our students need opportunities to engage with real industries, technologies, and challenges. Equally, our innovation ecosystem should be connected to organisations creating practical solutions in the economy,” he said in a statement on Friday (Sept. 18).

Lau also said the signing marked the beginning of the partnership, with its success ultimately measured by the outcomes generated through the collaboration.

“The real measure of success will be what we create together after today: programmes delivered, students exposed to industry, new capabilities developed and new ideas translated into meaningful impact,” he added.

Idea Company operates a 16-greenhouse facility in Bestari Jaya, Selangor, and has developed its proprietary AgOS framework using data from more than 255 crop cycles to support farm-level measurement, greenhouse productivity, traceability and data-driven agriculture.

Under the collaboration, both parties will co-develop entrepreneurship initiatives, including bootcamps, professional training and practical industry exposure.

Students could also benefit from opportunities such as internships, innovation challenges and work-integrated learning at Idea Company’s facility.

A key area of collaboration is Swinburne Sarawak’s potential involvement in the proposed National CEA Measurement Programme, which aims to strengthen links between Sarawak, East Malaysia and emerging developments in data-driven food production.

The partnership also aligns with Swinburne’s Ad Astra 2030 strategy, particularly its focus on co-creating industries of the future and developing technology-fluent graduates.

It further supports Sarawak’s development priorities in food security, modern agriculture, digital transformation and human capital development.

Meanwhile, Wong said the collaboration would deepen the connection between entrepreneurship education and applied industry opportunities while supporting the development of capabilities relevant to Sarawak’s evolving economy.

Beyond student engagement, the MoU also provides a platform for joint innovation activities and exploratory research, with specific projects to be pursued under separate agreements where appropriate.
