KUCHING: Young people’s interest in motorsport should be nurtured through training, discipline and organised programmes that allow them to develop their skills safely and responsibly.

President of the Sarawak Motorsport Association Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said motorsport programmes provide young people with opportunities to pursue their interests while learning proper riding techniques and road safety.

“Young people’s interest in motorcycles needs guidance and suitable outlets. Motorsport requires training, focus and discipline, including following officials’ instructions and complying with safety rules,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Rakan Litar: Moto Cub Track Day Sarawak 2026 programme at the Sarawak Youth and Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Ahmad also reminded participants not to use public roads for racing, warning that such behaviour could endanger their lives and those of other road users.

“On our roads, there are families travelling with children, elderly people and people earning a living. Every road user deserves to reach their destination safely.

“If you want to test your skills, do so at an approved venue through an organised programme and under supervision. Remember, your family is waiting for you to come home,” he said.

He said the development of motorsport could also equip young people with technical skills, including motorcycle maintenance and mechanical knowledge, which could help them secure employment or pursue entrepreneurship in the future.

Ahmad expressed hope that continued cooperation between government agencies, associations and clubs would create more training opportunities, identify emerging talent and promote a healthy motorsport culture in Sarawak.

He also said a shared interest in motorsport could help strengthen friendships and unity among young people from different backgrounds.

He thanked the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department and its team, the Sarawak Motorsport Association, D1 Motorsport Club, the organising committee and all parties involved in the programme.

He also congratulated the participants and urged them to apply the knowledge and experience gained while setting an example of disciplined riding among their peers.
