20 students from SMK Methodist who excelled in STPM rewarded

SIBU: Twenty students of SMK Methodist here who excelled in last year Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) were on Tuesday (Aug 6) bestowed with incentive awards by BuKit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

The presentation of incentive awards ceremony took place at the school hall.

The recipients were Ling Ying Xin (Full 4A), Clement Lee Wei Jie (Full 4A), Hakimi Aiman Abdul Rahman (4A), Betty Lau Pik Ling (4A), Jonathan Chin Chung Yii (4A), Oscar Tong Zu Ming (4A) and Vanessa Chieng Ai Ling (4A).

Others were Julia Wong Chin Hee, Wong Fang Ling, Nicole Cheng Kee, Bellion Muan Ningkan, Nurul Ain Syafiqah Mohamad Iskanda who all achieved 3A, apart from Cheryl Wong Hui Ni, Dayang Nur Fitria Abang Osmandi, Christee Clarissa Sato Kenedy, Lai Huan Zhe, Liyana Ainaa Yahya and Nur Nazmin Najihah Hadimi who each obtained 2A.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chieng said, the event in its third year, continued his commitment of recognising the hard work of the students.

Highlighting that education is a powerful tool that can transform the lives and create opportunities, he said these STM incentive awards symbolise the students’ dedication, perseverance, and passion for learning.

“I am convinced that investing in education is investing in our future, and I am committed to supporting and nurturing the talents of young people.

“This year, I am delighted to announce a total of RM22,700 in incentive awards for 57 outstanding students from two schools in my constituency.

“As we celebrate your achievements, i want to express my deepest appreciation to the teachers and parents who have supported you on this journey. Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in nurturing these bright minds, and today’s awards are a testament to your hard work,” he said.

Sharing on some insights into Sarawak development status and targets, Chieng pointed out the 2024 state budget allocated RM12,363 million, the highest budget among states in Malaysia with RM7,800 million for the development fund.

This, he said, will suppprt the goal of becoming a developed, high-income state by 2030.

Adding on, he said the state government aims to double the economy from RM136 billion in 2019 to RM282 billion by 2030, with a target annual growth of six to eight percent,as outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

Sarawak, he said, is set to be a leader in the green economy, advancing sustainability and decarbonization.

“We aim for net-zero emissions by 2050 and are pioneering the development of hydrogen as an emission-free fuel, renewable energy, Carbon Storage Utilisation (CCUS),and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

“With these developments, many opportunities will arise in Sarawak. I encourage you to pursue tertiary education and return to contribute to our state’s progress. Your skills and innovation are vital to our future,” Chieng added.

Meanwhile, SMK Methodist principal Philip Ling Swee Nge said a total of 67 candidates had sat for STPM 2023 and the school had managed to achieve an increase in GPS (Gred Purata Sekolah)of 3.07 compared to 3.04 in 2022.

He said this improvement has placed SMK Methodist among the 10 best schools for the STPM academic results 2023 in Sarawak.

Also present were the chairman of SMK Methodist Parent-Teacher Association, Ting Wei Ping.
