350 expected at Layar Cycling Carnival

KUCHING: The sixth edition of the Layar Cycling Carnival (LCC) slated for Aug 29 to Sept 1, is expected to draw 300–350 riders.

To encourage young riders, a new youth category (under 15) has been included, according to Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.

“A major sport in the Olympics and other competitions is cycling. Our goal is to maintain training and activities, particularly in Sarawak,” he said at a press conference here Friday (July 26).

Gerald said both the technical officers and teams would be accommodated at homestays in longhouses.

The three-day carnival consists of two main events, the criterium and the road race, with the addition of categories and cash prizes to attract more riders to join LCC this time.

“Among the famous teams from the country and abroad that will participate in the LCC this year are TSG Cycling Academy, Terengganu, Amigos Suci Brunei, Anak Brunei Cycling Team, RPM Team (Indonesia), SSC Development Team, Sonamu (Sarawak), Pro Apparel Team Sarawak, Giant Team, Ghost Speed Cycling Team, Masterpiece Cycling Team, Tugau Cycling Team, and Buceros WDT,” he said.

The event is organised by Saberkas Layar and Land and Survey Betong.

Meanwhile, a sales carnival and concert featuring several famous singers will also be among the exciting events held during the three-day event.

Also present were Betong Division Resident, Richard Michael Abunawas, President of the Sarawak Cycling Association, Datuk Benjamin Hasbie, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan.
