KUCHING: Telecommunications companies have upgraded network capacity at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) to ensure smooth internet connectivity for about 5,000 guests and event personnel attending the Malaysia Day 2026 celebration tonight.

Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), together with telecommunications companies, had been working at the venue since last Sunday (Sept 13) to strengthen network coverage ahead of the event.

She said the preparations included deploying temporary network assets and adding access points (APs) to improve coverage and internet speeds inside the hall.

“I believe that when we enter the hall, there shouldn’t be a problem because there are about 5,000 audience members together with all the personnel. So, we think it should be quite okay.

“Hopefully everything will be fine,” she told a press conference after visiting the MCMC Network Monitoring Centre in conjunction with the 2026 Malaysia Day Celebration at BCCK today (Sept 16).

Teo said the cooperation from telecommunications companies had also exceeded MCMC’s initial requirements, citing Telekom Malaysia (TM) as an example.

“For TM, we actually only requested 800 Mbps, but they eventually upgraded it themselves to 2 Gbps,” she said.

She said MCMC is working closely with U Mobile, TM, Maxis, CelcomDigi, Sacofa and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), among others, to ensure adequate connectivity throughout the celebration.

Teo said representatives from the telecommunications companies had also been stationed at the venue since Sunday to monitor and manage the network during the event.

She said the preparations are aimed at ensuring both guests and personnel could enjoy reasonable internet speeds and uninterrupted connectivity throughout the celebration.

Teo said the visit to the MCMC Network Monitoring Centre at BCCK was conducted to review the commission’s preparations and its coordination with telecommunications companies ahead of the Malaysia Day celebration.

On monitoring of content involving the 3R issues of race, royalty and religion, Teo said MCMC has a dedicated unit that continuously monitored content on social media platforms.

“Under MCMC, we have a unit that continuously monitors content on social media. We also work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to ensure that content involving the 3R can be acted upon as quickly as possible,” she said.
