MIRI (Aug 7): Miri MP Chiew Choon will request for a special allocation of RM100,000 from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the immediate repair and maintenance of buildings at Miri Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) and Miri Central Police Station (CPS Miri).
Chiew, who visited the family of a police personnel whose unit was damaged in a fire on Monday night, said that the incident called for a thorough check on wirings of all units of the quarters in IPD Miri.
“Although the cause of the fire is still under probe by the Fire and Rescue department (Bomba), we can see for ourselves that these buildings are in dire need of repair and are in worrying conditions.
“We can see that there are plants that have grown in the walls of these buildings, which shows how severe the damage and leaking conditions are in these buildings,” he said after visiting the victims at IPD Miri yesterday.
Chiew said the requested allocation is a temporary measure as long-term solutions are needed to address the welfare of the police here.
There is an urgent need to check the wirings in all units of IPD Miri quarters to prevent untoward incidents such as fire from recurring, he added.
He also pointed to the dire need of repair and upgrading for the CPS Miri building, suggesting that the building, which was built during the British era, needed either a facelift or be relocated to IPD Miri.
“CPS Miri is also flood-prone especially when it rains heavily and continuously due to the dilapidated roofing.
“This is really unacceptable,” he pointed out.
Noting that last year, the Home Ministry had allocated RM932,867 for projects to carry out repair and maintenance at IPD Miri, he said RM200,000 of the allocation was set aside to repair and renovate a section into a Child Interview Centre.
“Meanwhile, RM200,000 was used for repair and replace electrical wirings at CPS Miri, RM32,867 for the repair and maintenance of quarters in IPD Miri, while the remaining RM500,000 was used to repair and replace electrical wirings at IPD Miri quarters,” he said.
For long-term solutions, Chiew said he would meet with the Home Minister to resolve the long-standing issue, including requesting for additional allocation in Budget 2025 and to relocate CPS Miri to IPD Miri.
“The reason being, because the distance between CPS Miri and IPD Miri is only 1.8km and that IPD Miri has a large area and there is some land that is still not used.
“Furthermore, IPD Miri is situated very strategically in the city centre. In addition, there has been proposal for the relocation 10 years ago,” he said.
During the visit, Chiew handed over a cash donation to the victims.
Also present were Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu and his deputy Supt Mohd Sabri Zainol.
