KUCHING (July 23): The construction of a new SMK Sebuyau school building is expected to commence this year, said Sarawak Education Department director Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad.

He said approval has been granted for the construction and expects the project to begin as early as next month with the tender process.

“SMK Sebuyau has been approved for construction so the process will start this year. Very soon,” he said briefly to reporters when interviewed after a 2023 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) excellence appreciation ceremony at the department’s office at Petra Jaya here today.

On Sunday, Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi highlighted canopy tents had been temporarily set up at SMK Sebuyau for students and teachers to carry out their activities, since the Public Works Department had deemed its multipurpose hall unsafe.

Julaihi said despite its dilapidated state, the school has a student population of about 1,000 students and it was a pity the students and teachers were deprived of the necessary equipment and comfort for a conducive learning and teaching environment.

A new school building for SMK Sebuyau has been approved under the 11th Malaysia Plan and will be constructed on a new site at the new township of Sebuyau.

The project, with an allocation of RM110 million, involves 36 classrooms, hostels for 350 students and 12 teacher housing units among other facilities.
