SIBU (July 23): The police are tracking down the suspects involved in a commotion at Sibu Night Market in Jalan Cross here at around 7pm yesterday.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said they have arrested three men so far, including an Indonesian who are suspected to be involved in the case.

He said police received a report at 8.46pm yesterday following a viral post related to the incident on social media.

“The incident occurred when an intoxicated suspect caused a disturbance and damaged the trading stalls at Sibu Night Market.

“Several individuals who were there beat the suspect, causing him to suffer injuries,” he said in a statement.

Zulkipli said following a tip-off, personnel from the motorcycle patrol unit arrested a 31-year-old Indonesian, who is suspected to be involved in the case.

Another two local suspects, aged 31 and 35, were arrested by the personnel from the D7 branch of Sibu Crime Investigation Division, he added.

“A check found all three suspects do not have previous criminal records. The suspects will be remanded for further investigation,” he said.

He added the case is being investigated under Section 427/147 of the Penal Code for committing mischief to property and for rioting in a public place.

He advised the public not to make any speculations that might cause interference to the investigation.
