KUCHING, Jan 16: Four South Korean nationals were brought before the Magistrates’ Court here today for allegedly operating computer-based gambling machines earlier this month.

No pleas were recorded from the four men—two aged 27 and two aged 28—when the charges were read before Assistant Registrar of the Subordinate Court Salina Sahrom.

The court fixed Jan 19 for the charges to be re-read and for the accused to enter their pleas. No bail was offered.

According to the charge sheets, each of the accused is alleged to have operated gambling machines resembling computer sets at a condominium complex along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Ahmad Zaidi Adruce at about 2pm on Jan 7.

The case is being prosecuted under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a minimum fine of RM10,000 and up to RM100,000 for each machine seized, as well as a jail term of up to five years upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan appeared for the prosecution, while the four accused were represented by counsel Yong Suk Hui. — DayakDaily
