KRFC Blackcatz triumph at Rainforest Sevens Championship

KUCHING: Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC) Blackcatz put on an impressive display at the KRFC Rainforest Sevens Championship over the weekend.

KRFC Blackcatz hammered Warriors Oldboys Rugby Club (WORC) 33-5, much to the delight of team manager Ahmad Yusop Dato Mokhsen.

Ahmad said he was pleased with his team’s win but reminded them that there is still a long way to go as they will represent Sarawak at the National Sevens in Terengganu from July 12 to 14.

He told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday (June 30) at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field here that there is still a lot of hard work to be done before the tournament and more tournament exposure is required.

“If more tournaments are organised, maybe they (players) can go further, without tournaments, you cannot improve.

“If (we) compare to West Malaysia, they have tournaments almost every month, but here one or two…twice a year.”

Ahmad is eagerly anticipating the tournament, emphasising the need for teamwork rather than individual performance.

Meanwhile, national player Samuel Rentap, who is a part of the KRFC Blackcatz, expressed his excitement after the team won back the cup which was lost last year.

“I feel very excited, (we) managed to win back the cup which we lost last year and this year we came more prepared and with more experienced players and the young players stepping up.

“You can see it in the final, they (young players) were doing the hard work.”

Throughout the two-day tournament from June 29 to 30, a total of 240 players from 20 teams competed.

Present to witness the final were Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) president Richard Song, SRU patron Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Ghani, Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan.
