Lanterns, Jalur Gemilang and community spirit bring neighbours together on Malaysia Day

KUCHING, Sept 17: Colourful lanterns and the Jalur Gemilang lit up Westwood Garden, Jalan Tabuan, as more than 90 residents of different ages and backgrounds came together for a Lantern Walk on Malaysia Day, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and the spirit of community.

Organised by Jalan Rock/Bampfylde Neighbourhood Security and Development Committee (JKKK), the “Together Under the Moon” celebration brought together Chinese, Muslim and native residents, with participants ranging in age from just two to 86.

According to a media release today, the Lantern Walk was one of the highlights of the evening, with residents carrying colourful lanterns and walking together around the neighbourhood.

For several elderly residents, the relatively short walk was especially meaningful as they shared that they had not taken part in a lantern walk for many years, particularly alongside such a large group of neighbours.

Officers from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) also joined residents in the walk, with some officers experiencing the tradition for the first time.

Their participation gave them an opportunity to experience the Mid-Autumn Festival and learn more about the cultural tradition while engaging with residents in a relaxed community setting.

Held on Malaysia Day, the gathering took on added significance as neighbours from different racial and cultural backgrounds celebrated together.

With lanterns carried alongside the Jalur Gemilang, the evening offered a visual reflection of Malaysia’s multicultural character and the close community ties valued in Sarawak.

Also joining the celebration was Cr Nicholas Wung Duk Ying, who spent the evening with residents and contributed mooncakes and lanterns for the event.

JKKK Jalan Rock/Bampfylde said the celebration provided an opportunity to preserve and share the traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival while bringing neighbours together, encouraging interaction and strengthening relationships within the community.

The committee thanked Wung for his contributions, the police officers for participating in the Lantern Walk, and all residents who helped make “Together Under the Moon” a meaningful and joyful celebration. — DayakDaily
