Man denies rape charge involving 16yo, remanded without bail

KUCHING, Jan 19: A 30-year-old local man pleaded not guilty to a rape charge in the Sessions Court here today. The charge relates to an alleged assault on a 16-year-old girl last November.

The single charge was read before Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar. The accused is alleged to have committed the offence in a village in the Lundu district at about 6am on Nov 12, 2025.

The prosecution is proceeding under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

During today’s mention, Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng did not offer bail, citing the nature of the charge, which is categorised as a non-bailable offence.

The accused, who was unrepresented by legal counsel, acknowledged the proceedings with a nod but made no submission to seek bail.

As a result, the court did not grant bail. Judge Noorhisham fixed Feb 16 for case management and ordered the accused to be remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison pending the disposal of the case. — DayakDaily
