KUCHING Sept 18: A local man was sentenced to eight months behind bars and fined RM5,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here today after admitting to keeping roughly 2,774 child pornography files on his laptop.
Casimir Mangan, 38, pleaded guilty to the charge and will begin serving his sentence immediately, Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ruled.
The court further ordered that Mangan serve an additional three months in jail if he fails to settle the fine.
Upon completing his prison term, he will also be placed under police supervision for one year.
Mangan, who appeared without legal representation, was prosecuted under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The provision allows for a maximum five-year jail term, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.
Police moved against Mangan after intelligence gathered pointed to his involvement in child pornography, leading officers to search a house in Kampung Stapok, Jalan Batu Kawa, around 9am on September 14, 2026.
The search turned up approximately 2,774 pornographic videos and images of children stored on the accused’s laptop.
Mangan was arrested at the scene, and the device was confiscated to assist in further investigations.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani handled the prosecution. — DayakDaily
