Miri City Council to formalise MoU with Guangning County, China

MIRI: The formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Miri City Council (MCC) and Guangning County, China, is set to enhance cultural and economic ties and bolster the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home (S-MM2H) program, according to Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.

The MoU will be signed on Aug 27 by a delegation from Guangning County led by its county secretary.

This initiative aims to attract certain categories of foreigners to reside and potentially do business in Sarawak, provided they meet the necessary qualifications.

Yii addressed the media during a press conference on Wednesday (Aug 7), where he was accompanied by a delegation from the Miri Guangning Association.

He highlighted that the Chinese Consulate-General in Kuching would be present to witness the signing.

“The friendship between Miri and Guangning began in October 2012, initiated by the Miri Guangning Association. After 12 years, we are now formalising this MoU between Miri City and Guangning County,” said Yii.

He noted the significance of this agreement in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China.

“This friendly relationship is built on mutual respect and benefits, encompassing culture, tourism, and trade in e-commerce. We also welcome the MM2H scheme as it aims to attract foreigners to our region,” Yii added.

This MoU marks the third such agreement between Miri City and counties in China, following previous MoUs with Wei Hai, Shandong, and Taiwan Hua Lian.
